For Marie Montiel, thinking and painting are two inseparable actions. The paint itself is the material vector which embodies her thoughts and concerns. Part of her childhood was spent in a medieval donjon in France. This historical site was imbedded in her fantasies. So many centuries had past and so many lives were fashioned within these walls! It is there that she developed her interest in the human condition and for the contemplation of our world. As well as for painting of course!
Her painting technique is a combination of skills gained from studying fine arts in Montreal and Europe. Oil is her favorite medium. She appreciates its malleability and versatility. Her creative process is slow but well planned. Her figurative style is nourished by her observation. For her, painting is a tool of knowledge. It enables the study of people and things and helps in testifying about her past and her questioning. It tells of a moment, a feeling or a thought on a face or on an object. The ambience, posture, gesture, but also colors or texture, gives the painting its personal vision on the subjects.
Universality of emotions and attitudes both in human and animal is the focus of her work and it is evident in her creations. She hopes that the viewer finds time to think and meditate within the privacy of his or her own soul.
Native of France, Marie Montiel now lives and works in the Eastern Townships since 2011. She studied fine arts at the “Centre des Arts visuels de Montréal” and the Masters’ classic techniques at “l’École BohémiArte”. She also completed her training with live models at the “Studio Escalier” in France. Marie Montiel exhibits her work in Quebec and in Europe and continues her study of ancient paintings.
