Catherine Lessard is a textile artist with a communicative passion for the traditional hand woven sash of Quebec as well as the know-how which she discovered over forty years ago.
Learning this particular braiding technique with the book titled “LE FLÉCHÉ”, the art of hand weaving (Fançoise Bourret and Lucie Lavigne, Éditions de l'homme, 1973), Catherine Lessard quickly discovered new and creative possibilities. She explores and experiments as well as pursues a very personal artistic approach which leads her to create innovative, unique pieces. With curiosity and audacity, in total mastery of this know-how, nonetheless challenging and having to reinventing the practice, she reinterprets the woven compositions.
In a judicious profusion of colors and textures, sometimes adorned with pearls, stones or cut-outs, the threads intertwine with discipline and originality and draw known patterns or innovate in new interpretations. The arrow design comes to life. In total freedom of creation, this exhibition offers playful and colorful universes, rich in symbolism, which breathe poetry. We may discover, with astonishment and delight, the infinite beauty of a traditional but reinvented braiding technique.
Sharing her dreamlike vision, Catherine Lessard's work offers a harmonious visual and emotional experience. By following the inspired path of the threads, the viewer can only marvel and vibrate before the sensitive work of the artist. Emotionally, she identifies with these fantastic artistic proposals and, guided by the poetic texts which accompany and complete this exhibit, she explores her feelings, joys, sorrows, doubts and wonders.
Her remarkable creations help keep this know-how alive and dynamic. Exceptional, intimately linked to the history and culture of Quebec and for which we must collectively be proud of. Her work promotes the recognition of the woven sash as an art profession that is advantageously part of a current artistic expression. It is the memory and the future of this art.
