“Nothing is lost, nothing is created everything changes”...quoted from Lavoisier, reveals the transitional essence of reality and inspires the creations of Günes-Hélène Isitan since its beginnings. By integrating this notion in the ubiquitous evolution and transition concepts, her work questions the dichotomy Nature/ Culture. It offers a new perspective in our relationships with nonhuman elements.
By a multidisciplinary practice rooted in biological art, she explores ontological and ethical issues raised in the laboratory. By illustrating the extent of the impact initiated by new discoveries in the life sciences, her work contributes to the production of senses by developing verbal and visual language required to describe and understand these implications.
This exhibition, Micro landscapes, is a fusion of biological art and photography. Through her work, she is attempting to illustrate our present reality starting from the organic potential of photographic film in contact with the living. With this method, she may “grow” an image on a negative rather than “take” a photograph.
The result is a vivid image, that of microorganisms that line our world, including humans. In presenting this version of our reality, the artist seeks to encourage visitors to rethink the significant difference of our non-human companions.
Professional artist for ten years now, Günes-Hélène Isitan comes from Turkey and lives in Montreal. She is a multidisciplinary artist embedded in biological art, interlaced with pure science and philosophy. Her work has been exhibited in many galleries as well as artist’s centers in Canada, in the United States and in Europe. Her work took precedence over many others in various festivals and contests, as well as being published in several books and magazines, and in private collections.
