Due to the overwhelming success of the exhibition series DISCOVER YOUR PAST, the Eastern Townships Resource Centre (ETRC) is excited to unveil its next instalment. Newton Brookhouse: Pioneer in Townships Photography is an exhibition with photographic masterpieces pulled from the archives of the ETRC. Brookhouse is revealed to be a Townships’ photographer, thriving in the very early days of photography. The amazing quality of his pictures perfectly preserves the daily life and history of the Eastern Townships into spectacular images.
Visiting this exhibition, you will discover stunning photographs from across the Eastern Townships and observe Brookhouse’s undeniable connection with Lake Memphremagog, Georgeville, and the Memphremagog area. His photographs capture a time long gone, though revived through the Townships’ life and landscape we recognize in them today.
His photographs, mostly unidentified, present a mystery for archivists. We often do not know Brookhouse’s relation to his subjects or the rhyme and reason behind the photographs. However, it is clear the Townships satisfied his artistic passion, leaving us with vibrant images of a time since past. Newton Brookhouse effortlessly captures the vast beauty and intrigue of the Eastern Townships. In each photograph he tells a story, presenting his audience with subjects full of life. Though most photographs are unidentified, the mystery only enhances the timeless nature of his style and subject. Sprawling nature, families, local business- all are familiar.
