For over thirty years the artist Erik Beck has been interested in the phenomenology of chance and error in photography. Though, recently, his focus has been on creating and assembling “polyptyques” where he tries to release a new semantic dialogue and new graphics which would emanate from these random pairings. Therefore, he decided to develop two series of diptychs and triptychs.
The “modus operandi” of Erik Beck is to transcend the contemplative imperceptible, finding urban details often hidden, showing them on canvas and showcasing microcosms which are often frequented, but often overlooked. He uses the virtual absence and limitations of digital by carefully mapping each chosen subject, thus shaping a comprehensive image bank in which he may draw from to manufacture his “polyptyques”.
After a childhood where his creativity is expressed through music, Erik Beck pursued his studies at the University of Concordia in photography and sculpture. Active in cinema and radio, he will become a songwriter, actor and director and will also do several sound installations and performances.
Having learned with analog photography, where the process was slow and limited Beck decided to built his own visual language with which he still works today. Always eager to transgress established codes, it is natural for him to turn to mobile photography, this new medium in full swing and in the process of recognition in several institutions in visual arts.
Beck made several solo exhibitions and participated as well in group exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Montreal and Sherbrooke. He is a founding member of the group “Mouvement Art Mobile” (MAM).
